Twitter Glossary

@ (“At” Symbol):
The @ symbol goes in front of the other person’s username when you reply or when you’re speaking to someone 
# (Hashtag):
Place a hashtag ( the number sign) before a keyword or item of content, topic, or chat (i.e. #branding) to make it easier for you and others to follow a topic of interest.
 Avatar:
Your picture, logo, or an image that represents you or your business.
Background:
Choose a background from twitter or custom design your own (preferred) that is aligned with your branding and includes your vital information regarding your business, product, service, blogs, etc.
Bio:
A 160 character overview of who you are that appears on your page. Your bio is part of your Profile that includes your name, location, and web site (these are not counted in the 160 characters).
Direct message:
Speaking to someone privately by sending a message only they can see.  In order to send a direct message, the person to whom you are sending it must be following you.
DM:
Abbreviation for direct message.
Fail whale image:
The image you see when twitter is down or overcapacity.
Favorites:
Appears on home page; tweets that you have marked as your favorite (for later use, things you want other people to see)
“Find People” Tab:
Search for people you know who already have a twitter account
Following:
People that you’re following.
Follower(s):
Person or people following you.
Groups:
A number of individuals, who are united by a common interest, activities, or business, and meet on at a specific time on a regular basis.
Links:
The highlighted text that, when clicked, takes you to a web page.
Mention:
You answer a tweet or “speak” to someone on twitter.  Put the other person’s twitter name in front of your reply.  You may reply to anyone whether they are following you or not.
Mistweet:
A tweet you shouldn’t have sent; something sent public instead of a direct message (dm).
Peeps:
Short for people, your followers, people on twitter.
Profile:
Pertinent information about you that includes your name, location, website url, and bio.
Tweet:
140 character public message.
Reply:
Mentions were previously called “reply”
Retweet:
(abbreviations: RT, rtwt ) When you tweet someone else’s content to share with others.  Copy the other person’s message but before pasting it, type in “RT” and then paste the message. 
Settings:
From the Settings tab you can change your basic account info, fill in your profile data, and set whether you want to be private or public.
Shortened url:
Shortening url to fit in tweet (i.e. tiny url, bud url, cli.gs)
Shout-out:
Recognizing or recommending someone in a tweet.
Twitter tools and applications:
These make your use of twitter easier and more productive. Search.twitter.com (search twitter tools) for info.
Updates:
Appears on your page and takes you to a stream of your tweets to other people, or your followers in general.
What are you doing?:
The initial question that is always posed and ready to answer, giving you an instant way to communicate.
twebie:
A twitter newbie.
tweepish:
Feeling bad about something you tweeted.
tweeps:
People (peeps) who tweet, twitter users.
tweeple/tweople:
(Twitter People) twitter users.
tweeters:
People who tweet.
tweetaholic:
Someone who spends a large amount of time on twitter; also twitaholic, twaddict.
tweetback:
A reply to a tweet; tweet reply; @reply.
tweetup:
Meeting of twitter users.
twetiquette:
Rules of etiquette for twitter.
twestival:
A coordinated event run in many cities or areas in the country or worldwide to raise money for a cause.
tweetstream:
(also: twitstream) Combination of incoming and outgoing tweets of a user, or a topic, or a conversation.
twibe:
A twitter tribe (people following you on twitter).
twitjacking:
Posting from someone else’s account or having your account posted from especially if negative.
twitpitch:
A sales pitch on twitter.
twitspeak:
Language and terms used by twitters (Also: twitterspeak, twixicon, twictionary - all make up twixicon).
twitterbug:
twitter problems or glitches or the software, twitter virus.
twittermania:
The twitter fad.
twitterphobe:
(Also: twitterphobic, twitterphobia) someone who dislikes or fears using twitter in an extreme way.
twitterpreneur:
Some who has a twitter-based business.
twittererati:
Top tweeters.
twitterverse:
The twitter universe.
twittip:
(also: twip) A tip about a topic including how to use twitter.
twit:
A foolish or annoying twitterer.
twitterieria:
Lots of tweets, usually unpleasant or lacking in value.
twittersation:
Conversation conducted on twitter.
twollow:
Following someone on twitter.
twollower:
Someone who follows you on twitter.
